About the HouseWelcome to the Shipman House, home to one of Hilo's most influential families of the past two centuries. Built in 1899 on Reed's Island, on the lush green side of the Big Island of Hawaii, Hawai`i Island, it is one of the state's few remaining Victorian mansions. Hilo's most photographed residence, the restored "castle"
sits high on a ridge overlooking a deep gulch lined with magnificent stands
of Much of the original furniture remains in the house, which included a double parlor, library, dining room, conservatory, billiard room, and a second floor ballroom (now guestrooms). In the afternoon, guests may enjoy a cold beverage on the lanai overlooking Hilo Bay, just as the Shipman family did. The library is also available, as is the 1912 Steinway concert grand piano. The porte-cochere's high step accommodated turn-of-the-century horse-and-carriage passengers.
